Ross Street

New Residential

ROSS STREET is a new house located on a residential block on the outskirts of Bundanoon Village in the Southern Highlands, NSW.

The project made excellent use of a challenging topography, with the site sloping from the north-east to the south-west of the site. The site was afflicted with a BAL40 bushfire rating along the southern boundary which made the design of the southern elevation a challenge. The solution was focused on capturing natural light from the north, framing views (with limited glazing) to the south and stepping the building to take advantage of the topography.

The client for this project was a builder who our studio had a wonderful working relationship with, so there was a strong client/architect/builder relationship from the design stage of the project through to the completion of the build.

The brief for the project was open, with the clients interested to see what a site-specific design might look like for this site. The house was arranged so that there was flexibility in the floor plan for either a large family, inter-generational living, or guest accommodation. There were two master bedrooms designed for this house, so that future occupants could choose to inhabit the house at one level (and use the upper level master as a guest room), or for the master bedroom to be used separately from the remaining ground floor bedrooms. The house was arranged around a north facing courtyard which maximised the solar access to the house and provided a level area for entertaining straight off the kitchen/living areas. The lower level garage had adequate car storage, a wine cellar and internal access into the house.
